Years of wine

Text size: A | A

2001

The first year we produced red wines only from our vineyards and the first Cabernet Franc for us. This to be the last year we produce Chardonnay. We did not plant any white variety and decided not to buy grapes. The stage of irrigation ended. We are totally relying on the rain with all its risks and meaning. In our possession 2 Acre ( 0.8 Hectare ) of Merlot, 6 Acre ( 2.4 Hectare ) of Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5 Acre ( 0.6 Hectare ) of Cabernet Franc and 0.25 Acre ( 0.1 Hectare ) of Durif. The harvest yield is low and varies from harvest to harvest, Small berries and very full aromatic and Phenolic maturation with low PH and high acids. The first time we left 4 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and one barrel of Merlot for 2 years, consequently was sold as Cabernet Sauvignon "Lot 37".

2000

The year of the 3rd millennium! A very good year for Israeli wines, and especially for Margalit winery. Mixed sources of our grapes, Kerem Ben Zimra, Ramat Arad, Karmei Yosef and some from our own vineyard – Kadita. The Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was exceptionally good.

1999

We planted a second vineyard of Cabernet Franc at Binyamina. The soil is red loam and it is very good for the vines because it gives very good color and unique flavors. The two vineyards were irrigated for the first two years and we gradually lowered the irrigation through the following two years until we stopped all together. One time only we produced Carignan in an effort to prove that it is passable to make high end wine from a grape variety which has a bad reputation. We harvest from an old vines of low crop with no irrigation in the last few years. The 300 bottles from one barrel we produced were so rare that the wine became a myth. If one should get a hand on one of the bottles, it will be an interesting experience.
